A fuschia explosion outside my front door

Nick and I have lived in our house just long enough for me to recognize that the plants and flowers in our yard have their good years and then their not-so-good years. This year happens to be not just a good year for our climbing clematis. But maybe like, its BEST.YEAR.EVER.

It’s amazing how Mother Nature can sneak up on you … one day there’s nothing there to show and the next, hellloooo, you come home to an explosion of this kind of beauty greeting you as you get out of the car. God has the best color palette to choose from, doesn’t he? :)

Dave, Michelle and Duncan: Sneak Peek

Where do I even start with describing this family session? There is so much to say about this couple and this little boy who has brought so much joy into their lives and the lives of their friends over the past 5 years. To start with the story now would take me away from finishing editing their images, and images, of course, are why you’re here.

So I’ll refrain myself from listing the 107 ways in which Michelle has been a second sister to me and — for now — introduce you to this delightful trio.

Gary and Jen: Engagement

There’s something about taking pictures of family that puts me in total “flashback mode.” While editing, I just can’t help but think of all the memories I’ve shared with that person over the years.

With Gary, this extends back to his being ringbearer and my being flower girl in my sister’s wedding (If I had a copy of the photo of the two of us from said event, I so would have scanned it and added it to this post. Let’s just say it was 1989, white pumps were TOTALLY in, I had just lost my first tooth and Gary had a sunburn from too much time at the lake!)

Fast forward 20-plus years and Gary and I aren’t kids anymore. We’re grown-ups and each of us couldn’t be happier with the person we’ve chosen to share our own lives with (right, Gary? :) ) Jen, you are a doll and I so look forward to welcoming you into our family. And thanks you two for braving the heat for this session. I know you’re excited to get back to Indiana and start the next chapter of your lives, but never forget how much you grew up (both as individuals and as a couple) during your two years in that desert heat :)

To see more, don’t forget to CHECK OUT THE SLIDESHOW!

Speaking of heat …. well, hellloooo hotness!

We took all of their photographs in Old Towne Scottsdale (thanks Melissa for the recommendation!) It was SO fun to shoot some place new and there was just something about Arizona and its sunshine that made me want to never stop taking photos!

I love when everything comes together to make an adorable shadow happen!

I love the way Gary is looking at Jen here. So sweet and Jen, you have such a great smile!!

Jen, I hope you never get tired of hearing me say how GORGEOUS you are? ‘Cause with this image, I rest my case.

Thanks for an AMAZING time in Arizona you two (and for being my Sedona chaperones!) Can’t wait to get together when you’re back in our neck of the woods!!!

Canine companions

While I was out in Arizona, I got the biggest kick of out Gary and Jen’s dogs — that’s Ty (on the left) and Judy (on the right). I think because I have a dog that’s not only overweight (as Nick says, ‘Daisy’s got back’) but terribly lazy (as exhibited here), I didn’t know how to act around two pint-sized pups who could give Richard Simons a run for his money in the energy department. It was so much fun to wake up each morning and have these little balls of fluff climb all over me, licking me with their tails wagging furiously. They were just so happy to love on somebody new that their joy, in turn, made ME happier. :)

Because Gary and Jen didn’t have a lot of photos of them and because well, we all need a special portrait of our animals, I had to take a few snaps of the cuteness. How much do we love our pets?

Gary and Jen: Sneak Peek

I try REALLY hard to hold on to my favorite image from a session to include it as part of a couple’s full blog post, but I just couldn’t do it this time around. Not with this couple that is so dear to my heart. And not when there’s so much to be loved about this photograph that it couldn’t NOT be shared (I just cringed over my own use of a double negative there)!

But seriously, how cute are these two? :) More on the way … but Gary and Jen, I hope this tides you over until I can finish editing the rest!

MJ 2Day Workshop: The Experience

A few months back I was getting an itch to take a risk — one that would make me become a better photographer, a better businesswoman and a better person in general. It all centered around the idea of a workshop, but I didn’t know who to seek out for the experience. And even more so, I questioned if I was worth it. When you’re starting a business of your own, the moments of self-doubt can be all-encompassing and deciding whether to invest in myself in this way was one of them.

In the midst of all this questioning, I learned that one of my favorite wedding photographers, Melissa Jill, was hosting a workshop at her home in Arizona. It was a place I’d never been, meeting a photographer I’d always admired and it felt like it could be a good fit. A really good fit. I loved Melissa’s style, her imagery, the down-to-earth persona that came across online (and was so evident in person), not to mention her helpfulness at answering my — and so many other people’s — questions via her blog and e-mail. So I took a deep breath, signed up, and wondered what would be in store for me when I showed up. As the old saying goes, the bigger the risk, the bigger the reward.

I am still trying to process everything I learned from Melissa and from the 12 other wonderful women who accompanied me for two days of so much learning, our brains felt like they’d start leaking out our ears by the end of a verrryyyy long Day 2! I feel motivated. Inspired. And not just any kind of inspired. I’m talking the kind of inspiration fueled by the Energizer Bunny. On the way home on the plane, I made a list of goals (ha — me making a list, that NEVER happens (insert sarcastic laugh here)) of all the things I want to accomplish in the months — and years — ahead for my business. Here’s to knocking out every one with that bunny’s drum in hand. Because at this rate, I plan to just keep going, and going, and going ….

Editing into the wee hours of the night

And finally … Melissa was gracious enough to take nice headshots of ALL of us. Needless to say, we were all feeling a little worse for the wear (did I mention this workshop was in Phoenix? Where the temperature was 100 degrees? And we’d been outside shooting for two hours? :) ) At any rate, we all appreciated the time she spent doing that for us and this was my favorite photo she took of me. It’s now my Twitter profile. If you’re on Twitter, find me — my profile name is glwerner!

Thank you again Melissa for such a wonderful experience — I know there are moments from this trip I won’t soon forget!

MJ 2Day Workshop: The Couple

I racked my brain on how best to share with my blog readers what all transpired last week while I was in Phoenix for Melissa Jill’s MJ 2 Day workshop and decided it best to go with a few themes. So up first is the fantabulous Jeff and Meghan, the g-o-r-g-e-o-u-s couple that joined Melissa and the 13 of us who participated in her workshop for a fun lifestyle photo shoot on Day 1.

We girls spent much of the first day soaking in Melissa’s knowledge on technique, post-processing and workflow and so it was a blast to all come together and watch Melissa work her magic on location with a couple toward day’s end. Of course, none of us could resist crowding around her to get our own snaps, which led to a scene that had to appear to passers-by as if  a pair of celebrities were being hounded by a hoard of female paparazzi (and seriously, with a couple this smoking hot, the idea is not that much of a stretch).

This shoot was done in Old Town Gilbert — so quaint with lots of fun places to shoot.

As soon as they showed up, I couldn’t help but notice Jeff’s Chucks. A man after my heart! :)

0002jeffmeghan_2009

Jeff and Meghan had recently celebrated their first wedding anniversary. I think every one of us in the group must have told them at least once that, when the time came, they were going to make some beautiful babies - hehe.  :)

This shot is just …. WOW.WOW.WOW

Meghan had the cutest expressions!

Melissa gave all of us in the group the cutest goodie bags. I asked her if she could have snuck in a few bottles of that amazing southwestern sunshine. Seriously, the light on this evening was INSANE.

More photos to come from our second day with Melissa — including some shots of new techniques (well, new to me) that I feel like I’ve FINALLY conquered thanks to this workshop! Stay tuned …

Back from Arizona!

You know how when you return from a trip, you feel like you need a vacation from your vacation? That is SO me right now :)

But the great news is that I’m back from my photography workshop in Arizonia feeling incredibly pumped about all the amazing stuff I’ve learned and that I cannot WAIT to share (so gear up for a few blog posts in the coming week about the amazing ladies I met and what kept us busy for two jam-packed days of learning).

I also had the chance to hang out with my step-nephew and his fiance (their engagement photos are coming too) and to pay a visit to beautiful Sedona (of COURSE I snapped a ton of shots while we were there too).

For now, I’m in that post-traveling-day mode of unpacking luggage, cleaning the house and stocking a fridge that’s been neglected by my hubby who spent the past week as bachelor back home :)

More to come — and if you’ve emailed or called me in the past few days, don’t worry, I’ll get back to you as soon as I get back to reality!

Best. apple. pie. EVER.

My parents paid Nick and I a visit recently and my mother knows that all it takes to cement my husband’s love for her is one of her apple pies.

When she pulled the tin foil off her latest confection — just hours out of the oven — I think the drool started pooling at the sides of both our mouths. Needless to say, when a Sandy Koch culinary creation is gifted to the two of us, it doesn’t last long in the Werner household.

My mom is an AMAZING cook — few can cook a meatloaf better than she and her potato salad is legend (wait for it) dary — but it’s her apple pie that tops ‘em all. So much so that if she were to have a bake-off with the Big Man upstairs, I’m pretty sure he’d tear off his apron, throw up his flour-coated hands and declare my mom the winner.

Yep, it’s THAT good.

Mom — on this Mother’s Day Eve — I just want to thanks for all you do for us two. Baking pies no exception.

Just a reminder to everyone that I’ll be leaving tomorrow for a workshop in Arizona, hosted by the uber-talented wedding photographer Melissa Jill. I can’t wait to share all the details of the trip when I get back! I’m so nervous but so excited, so wish me luck! :)
