I’m a sucker for year-end lists

It doesn’t matter who’s puttin’ ‘em out — TIME, Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Rolling Stone — I love to see what music and films make critics’ best of the year lists. And admittedly, I enjoying feeling “on it” when I see my tastes coincide with theirs (come on, you do this too, right? It’s like, when you’ve read a book Oprah picks for her book club and then secretly give yourself a high-five.)

My friend Melanie sent an e-mail request out to some of her pals (myself included), asking us to compile our favorite songs/albums of 2008, burn ‘em to a disc, and she’d coordinate a swap of the tunes. Isn’t that a fabulous idea? It’s like a chain letter for the ears.

In putting mine together, I thought, heck, why not post some here. So, if you’re up for some new tunes, here were a few of the artists who caught my attention in ‘08. My ears look forward to what’s ahead in ‘09.

1) Kings of Leon — “Use Somebody” (the band won’t allow you to embed their music vids, so if you want to see it, go here)
These guys have been around for a few years but they were a major ‘08 music discovery for me. The first time I heard this song, I was just wowed. And every song off their new album, “Only By the Night,” is crazy good. Try getting “Sex on Fire” out of your head after you listen to it. It’s music that stays with you. And as a kick-start to my 2009, I’ll be seeing the band perform in Indy this January. HELLO NEW YEAR :)

2) Fleet Foxes — “White Winter Hymnal”
This band has such a throw-back sound. They’ve gotten some comparisons to the Beach Boys and Simon & Garfunkel … but I find their work to be pretty unique. There is no one else out there right now making this kind of music. And the video is worth watching alone for the Claymation.

3) Laura Marling — “New Romantic”
If you like Regina Spektor or Feist, chances are good you’ll like Laura’s sound. Her debut album, “Alas I Cannot Swim” has been playing on my computer non-stop in recent weeks. The craziest thing about her talent? She’s 18. If she keeps it up, I can’t wait to hear what comes next.

4) Bon Iver — “Skinny Love”
This guy (Justin Vernon) has a back story that reminds me of one of my other favorite musicians, Ray LaMontagne. He stumbled across a music career making his ‘08 debut album, “For Emma, Forever Ago” while secluded in a cabin in Wisconsin. I’ve been playing “For Emma” a lot lately as it has a sound that makes a perfect soundtrack for a bleak winter day. Oh, and as you can see from the video, Justin’s a bit more Paul Bunyan than Mick Jagger … it suits him and you know, for some reason, I find that way more sexy.

5) Santogold — “L.E.S. Artistes”

I have my friend, Jon, to thank for this fantastic musical find. The first time I heard this, a group of us were cruising in his convertible and he told us he’d dubbed it “the song of the summer.” I couldn’t agree more, but that hasn’t stopped me from listening to this one long after the snow started falling.

6) City and Colour — “Sleeping Sickness”

Something had to give for me in ‘08 and I’m sad to say it was guitar lessons. I’ve struggled for 3 years to learn how to play a beautiful instrument my husband gifted me for X-mas one year and it’s official — I kind of suck. But I have my fabulous rocker of a guitar instructor, Chris, to thank for introducing me to City and Colour. Chris has performed with the artist, whose band title is a twist on his own name (Dallas Green…get it? :) He’s Canadian though, so cut him slack on that ‘u’ in there). Before Chris and I parted ways, I learned to play this song and it became a bit of a summer anthem for me. The whole album, “Bring Me Your Love,” is pretty fabulous.

7) Coldplay — “Lovers in Japan/Reign of Love”

This isn’t the song I gave Mel from the band’s ‘08 album, “Viva La Vida/Prospektor’s March,” but it ran a close second. There are two kinds of people: those who hate Coldplay. And those who love them. I happen to fall into the latter category and celebrate their entire catalogue, “Viva” being the latest addition.

8 ) Vampire Weekend — “Oxford Comma
I’m pretty sure I first saw these guys on SNL at the start of the year, and was wowed by them right away. Such a fun, quirky sound. Their whole album, “Vampire Weekend” is just fun to have on while you’re making dinner or getting ready to go out.

9) TV on the Radio — “Golden Age”
Admittedly, this is one heck of a weird video. But this song has such a great, funky beat. If I have it on while I’m in the kitchen, I inenvitably start to dance. It’s hard to get that sound out of your head. And apparently I’m not the only one who thinks as such — their ‘08 album, “Dear Science” was at the top of a lot of year-end lists. Since I just discovered them, it’s still getting a lot of play on my iPod.

10) John Mellencamp — “Sweet Love”
I have a soft spot for this guy — representing us Hoosiers from Nick’s part of the woods — how could I not? His ‘08 album, “Life, Death, Love, & Freedom” contained some of the best material he’s done in ages. This song was a personal favorite.

What about you guys? What were some of your favorite songs of the year? Bless you if you made it to the end of this post — as you can see, I’m as passionate about music as I am photography.

And speaking of photos, I’ll bust some images out for my next post — if I tackle music, I have to tackle my favorite images of 2008, right? It’ll give me something to do while Nick spends his New Year’s watching football :)

The holidays can be hard …

When you have to say goodbye to cuties like this little guy.

Nick and I spent nearly a week at his parent’s farm in Brown County, doing what close-knit families do best — game playing, joking, hanging out, oh yeah, unwrapping a few gifts too. (We also shared a few memories over a bottle of wine and a roaring fire when, upon returning from Christmas Eve service, we came home to a house that had no power for four hours!)

It’s rough because as someone who is fortunate to see her own siblings so frequently with just an hour car trip north, I know it can be hard on Nick and his siblings — who are spread far and wide — to have to cram as much bonding time as they can into the span of just a few days.

These power sessions of course mean I have to take as many photos as I can of nieces and nephews, Isaac here no exception.

Little buddy, I’m not sure when we’ll make it down to South Carolina next, but I’m looking forward to holding you with sand between my toes and I know your Uncle Nick is too.

Wishing you the hap, hap, happiest Christmas (48 hours early)

I think I might have Santa Claus beat on having a list and checking it twice.

As I’m wrapping gifts today, packing for our trip to Nick’s family in Brown County over the Christmas holiday and performing a dance to the weather gods to keep at bay the ice-sleet mix that is pelting most of the state so we can make it to my in-laws, I thought I’d take a minute to wish all my blog readers a VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS!

And for those of you I forgot to add to the Werner Christmas card list this year, well, Daisy wishes you a festive holiday season too:

And because it’s all too appropriate and I just watched it and can recite all these from memory, here’s a few Clark Griswald gems to help you count down to your own hair-raising family gathering in a few days’ time:

Bethany: Is your house on fire, Clark?
Clark: No, Aunt Bethany, those are the Christmas lights.

Clark: Well I’m gonna park the cars and check the luggage, and well, I’ll be outside for the season.

Clark: Can I refill your eggnog for you? Get you something to eat? Drive you out to the middle of nowhere and leave you for dead?
Eddie: Naw, I’m doing just fine, Clark.

Ellen: Clark, Audrey’s frozen from the waist down.
Clark: That’s all part of the experience, honey.

Eddie: I don’t know if I oughta go sailin’ down no hill with nothin’ between the ground and my brains but a piece of government plastic.
Clark
: Do you really think it matters, Eddie?

Clark: I simply solved the problem. We needed a coffin… Er, a tree. There are no lots open on Christmas Eve. Lewis burned down my tree so I replaced it as best I could. Voilà.
Ellen: Are you okay?

Clark: I dedicate this house to the Griswold Family Christmas.

Nikki and Keegan

What I love most about engagement shoots with my couples is getting to know them better before their big day — their likes, their dislikes, what they do for a living, what makes them tick. In this case, it was pretty obvious after just a few hours with Nikki and Keegan that these two do just that for one another.

I remember asking Keegan about his interests and hearing him tell me about wanting to be an art teacher and his fondness for painting. But more than his words, what captured my attention during the exchange was Nikki at his side, beaming (doesn’t she have a GORGEOUS smile?) with pride. I could tell she didn’t want to brag about her future husband and his talents, but those words? Yeah … they were so right there on the tip of her tongue, wanting to escape.

Nikki and Keegan, I can’t wait to document your wedding in April. Until then, these photos will have to tide you over until the new year — and your journey together — officially begins!

PS — Okkaayy, this AMAZING SLIDESHOW might help with the wait too :)

(Pssssttt … I told you these guys were hot) :)

I would call this a FAVORITE, but that would imply I had just one on this shoot, huh?

Two things that pop in my head when I see this photo: 1) They are too cute and 2) Could this be in a magazine or what? You can’t get models to fake it this good! :)

After we hung out along the river, we headed over to IPFW, where Keegan is a student and Nikki an alum. This next photo is particularly sweet because it’s the exact spot on campus where Keegan proposed to his future wife. They were only too happy to show it off and when I asked Keegan, “You wanna get down on your knee again?,” well … this is what he gave me:

And a shot right after that says it all

Giving a bit of a shout-out to IPFW’s (colorful) mascot!

And finally — what’s not to love about a little repetition, black and white and a gorgeous pose? I am in love with this shot — aren’t you guys?

I really love …

Method cleaning products.

After a whirlwind of out-of-town weekends, I spent the day today (with Nick’s help) scouring our house. Vaccuming? Check. Laundry? Check. Mopping floors? Check. Cleaning toilets? Check (and ugh).

In a way, it was nice to slow down and bring our place back to order. Doesn’t your whole outlook on life just brighten 120 percent when you have a clean house?

And what I love when I’m done is the way our house smells after using my favorite all-natural, non-toxic Method products. Long ago, I swapped out my headache-inducing Swiffer cleaning spray for Method’s lemon ginger floor cleaner. I love their almond-scented cleaner for all the hardwood floors we have in our house. And their cucumber-scented all-purpose spray is awesome in the kitchen. Oh, and if you really want to get nitty-gritty, their eucalyptus flushable wipes are PERFECT for cleaning that big ceramic bowl you loathe the thought of tackling in your bathroom.

From the packaging (which I’m a total sucker for) to the product, Method is hard to beat. And I give this company credit … I’m not sure there are too many other cleaning products out there that can drive me in to Monica Gellar mode, salivating every few months in the aisles of Target over their newest line of goods.

Fun stuff coming this week — Nikki and Keegan, I am THISCLOSE to being done with your session! Get ready to fall in love with this gorgeous couple :)

The Zerns and more Landin cuteness

Okay, because I know Jodie has been waiting on these photos forever, I’m going to cut to the chase and just start by posting this adorable cuteness. Don’t you just wish little boys like this would be left on benches so you could stuff them in your oversized purse and take them home with you? :)

If this photo had a caption written by me, it would read something like: “Could not love this family more.”

I’m not even lying when I say I could edit photos of Landin ALL DAY LONG (and given that I had a computer melt-down in the process of editing this session, lost a lot of work, and had to start over … well, I kind of did. So it’s a good thing he is SO STINKIN’ CUTE!)

Jodie, if he was mine, I’d eat his face too :)

FAVORITE!

I set this shot up. But the finger? The finger was all Landin’s idea

Adam and Jodie, thank you for paying my way into the Botanical Gardens and for trusting me to document the amazing life of your little boy.

And because we all love ‘em so gosh darn much, THIS SLIDESHOW IS A MUST-SEE!

Rachel and Brayton

Earlier this fall I had the chance to second shoot another wedding with Indy-based photog Buffy Hostetler.

I didn’t know much about this shoot going in, just the location of the church where I was supposed to meet up with the gang. When I walked in, these were the first words exchanged between myself and the bride:

Me: “RACHEL?!”

Bride: “GAIL?!”

Me: “Oh my gosh — you’re getting married!”

Bride: “Oh my gosh — you’re at my wedding!”

It’s funny how small the world is. Rachel was in a couple of my classes at Ball State while I was in grad school on a short-lived journey of becoming a journalism adviser. Rachel stuck with that path and now is a teacher in Columbus, Ind. (another small ironic twist, my hubby used to cover that school district when he worked for the newspaper there). And here I am, three years later, taking photos on a path that has clearly drifted but with no regrets or complaints on my end.

I love shooting weddings — sure they are a lot of stress, but after the day is over and all has gone as it should … well, you end up with great memories like these.

Rachel has SUCH a great smile — it’s an asset of hers that is impossible to ignore (I think you’ll see what I mean by the end of this post :) )

How much does she look like her mother in this one?

Rachel and Brayton opted to see each other before the ceremony. Looking back, I wish Nick and I had done that. Those raw emotions you’re experiencing in that moment are a lot easier to let go unchecked when 200 people aren’t watching your every move.

PS - I love the light in this shot :)

Beautiful October day. Fall colors. A bouquet of gerber daisies. What’s not to love?

Something must have been funny here (and no, I wasn’t kidding about Rachel’s megawatt smile!)

A little pre-ceremony pep talk

I love this shot of Rachel and her dad before walking down the aisle. What a proud papa!

(FUNNY STORY: Moments after taking this shot I took on a second title — organist wrangler. With no Canon in D or Here Comes the Bride, the woman paid to play the pipes had missed her cue. TWICE. Rachel later told me the bridesmaids could see me in the balcony, mouthing “YOU. PLAY. NOW.” :) All in a day’s work … :) )

Hey Rachel, who’s that hot hubby whose hand you’re holding?

How low can you go … can you go down low? All the way to the floor now …

Rachel and Brayton thank you for allowing me to tag along and be Buffy’s shadow for the night! You guys had a great wedding (oh yeah, and I’m STILL thinking about that dinner I devoured!)
